I have the honor respectfully to report upon the general operation of this Bureau for the month of May. There have been fewer complaints than in some previous months.

I have on record, 4 cases of threatening life of Freedmen to run them off, or gain other ends.  4 
Assault and Battery.  2 
Cruel beating of child by its father (col'd)  1 

There are also rumors of a murder committed by Peterson Harris, at South Butler, and of a Freedman being lynched in the same neighborhood, on account of alleged house stealing, which have not yet been so confirmed as to warrant active measures.

As an illustration of the extreme sensitiveness of the Court and People here upon the subject of whipping children, when the offender is black, I may state in the above case, that the father was fined one hundred dollars and costs, which will take nearly all his crop to pay. In cases of
