1. The contracts most commonly entered into, stipulates that the employer shall furnish quarters, fuel, land, stock, freed for stock and implements; that the freedmen shall board themselves, make and gather the crop, which shall be equally divided between the two parties. Freedmen have been earnestly advised not to enter into this, to indeed, any other kind of share contract with any but the actual owners of the land, unless the land owner enter into a stipulation in writing, releasing the freedman's share of the crop from liability for payment of rent that may become due to him from the lessee. This advice has been given, to secure the freedmen against the unjust operation of the statute relative to land lord's liens.
