opponents of the school to understand that he was not to be trifled with or intimidated, and his School is now neither threatened or molested. He has more than a hundred pupils in daily attendance. No children could make more rapid progress than those make in this school. One of his pupils, about 13 years old, has been in school but eight months, and can write a creditable composition, solve problems in the "rule of three" and read well in any book or newspaper. Others exhibit similar proficiency. I have been completely astonished at the reading and spelling of little children who could hardly be presumed to know the alphabet. 

7. General feeling between the races. Some most atrocious outrages upon freedmen have been reported to me, evincing on the part of individuals the spirit of incarnate fiends, but the mass of the white people are not amenable to the charge of sympathy with the perpetrators.
