the cases of colored persons tried and convicted before the Grand Jury, at the Spring Term of the Dallas County Circuit Court recently closed by Military orders. In two of these cases when it appeared that the sentences were not warranted by the evidence, special request was made through this office for a new trial, upon the ground, that the evidence was insufficient for their conviction, and the jury, before which they were tried, was an illegal one, the court having ignored Military orders in the selection of the jurors. Of the thirteen (13) persons condemned before the jury, twelve (12) were colored and one (1) was white. As yet, I have not learned that the sentences were unjust, except in the cases above mentioned.

Very few cases of destitution have been brought to the notice of this office. The Soup Kitchen has been located at the Freedmens Hospital. The need of assistance from this source has greatly diminished. Many poor persons have gone to the county with families in which they lived, while some begin to derive some support from the products of their vegetable gardens. The Selma Relief Association continue their charities to the needy whites.
