month, and have urged upon them the necessity of education. At Columbiana, Shelby County, the Freedmen are very anxious to have their school continued, but have not any building to teach in, as the one used by them for the past year has been taken by the white citizens for their school.

The Freedmen at this place are unable to furnish money, but are willing to donate a portion of their time for labor upon the building, if they can get assistance from the Government to furnish lumber and other material to build.

Miss G.S. Thompson has given the Land, and application has been made to the Supt of Education of this State for three hundred and fifty dollars"

There are about one hundred children to be educated at this place. At Gadsden Bain County the Freedmen have subscribed two hundred dollars ($200) towards buying a Lot and building a school house, and will require about one hundred and fifty dollars ($150) more, and ask for assistance from the Bureau.
