St Clair County has seven hundred and thirty two children, four hundred males and three hundred & thirty two females.

Cherokee County has six hundred and eighty one children three hundred and seventy eight males and three hundred and three females. 

Cleburne County has two hundred and forty one children, and hundred twenty four males and one hundred and seventeen females.

Talladega county is the only one that free schools for the freedmen have been established under the State Law by the County Supt as far as I have been able to learn; this is owing in a great measure to the County Supts not having the law, and feeling unwilling to act without it.

There seems to be disposition on the part of the most of the County Supts to give the freedmen an opportunity to go to school. In some counties I am sorry to say that I think there is a disposition on the part of the whites to through every obstacle in the way of the Education of the freedmen.
