Frank Holden complains that on Monday 13 Nov 1865 Campbell Clay came to him and offered to buy his cotton. That he owed a Mr. Garner some money who held his cotton 262# for the debt. Clay took the cotton paid G. and promised him 40$ for the cotton he paid him for it don't know how much he got for it. this was at the grocery where we were at the time. Ashford said I owed him 12$ I paid him. They, Clay Ashford & Todd, proposes to me to play cards we had drank several times and commenced to play and drank while we played. Don't know how long we played. When I got up I had lost all the money Clay paid me for the cotton he won it or they between them. I had no cotton or money left when I went home
