an inspection ofit I find that the majority of cases are assault and Battery, large numbers of complaints relate to employers turning off the employees without just compensation.
From the complaint book I take the following particulars of another case of selling a person.
Wm Wingley J.P near Butler Chocktaw County sold as a vagrant the wife of Marcus, for a period of 6 months, said William Wingley Justice of the Peace, being the purchaser for one dollar This Justice of the Peace assaulted and beat the woman, and her husband finding he could not get justice in Choctaw County came up to Demopolis to lay the matter before the bureau. The action taken by Maj Pierce in this case was to write some attorney in Choctaw to prosecute the "justice of the peace" for assault and battery, and he wrote to Wingley that he the said Wingley had laid himself liable to a find of $1000.00 under the 'Civil Rights Bill' for selling the woman cases like the above are not of as frequent occurance as they were some time since.
