the Feminist Studio Workshop

An alternative educational institution committed to exploring, creating and sharing women's culture, the goals of the Feminist Studio Workshop are to enable women to enrich their own experiences and imagery with the history and symbolism of women's art and cultur-al achievement and to develop a community supporting the placement of that work in the public sphere. The richness of the Feminist Studio Workshop experience lies in the variety created by collaborative and large group projects, individual work and classes. It is the site of innovative and pioneering efforts in feminist education, theory and art and seeks to give women a glimpse of a possible future in which we reach closer to our full potential. The unique quality of the Feminist Studio Workshop is that along with gaining skills and information, women are challenged beyond their assumed limits and find support for developing their own content and for bringing to their work the personal, emotional and gentle caring that has been removed in patriarchal culture and classrooms.

CORE PROCESS
The heart of the Feminist Studio Workshop, this will be a celebration and exploration of our commonalities and differences. We will define and build community, examine political and personal issues and ideas, develop creative forms and discuss feminist history and ideology. Our work will include art making, CR, individual and collaborative projects, worksharing, shared readings, community meetings, individual counselling and potluck dinner/celebrations.

ARIADNE, A SOCIAL ART NETWORK
This project, which addresses the problem of violence against women, is offering skills in art and political analysis necessary to develop art in the direction of effecting social change. Special projects will offer the opportunity to gain experience in the development of multi-media work.

LESBIAN ART PROJECT
The exploration and creation of lesbian culture and sensibility through research, CR, art making and celebration. Activities include an educational program, research on historical and contemporary lesbian creators, and the creation and publication of a book of information and theory of lesbian contribution to culture.

THERAPEUTIC ARTS
A program designed to stimulate psychological depth, woman's consciousness and personal identity in context of the creative arts. Unique classes in the visual arts, dance, drama, writing and other healing processes which emphasize self creation as an integral part of art making.

VISUAL ARTS
This year's program will stress a basic approach to expressing ideas visually through the development of a visual vocabulary, exploration of various materials and techniques and through the making of objects. Classes will include design, drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and new forms and concepts.

WOMEN'S GRAPHIC CENTER
What makes this program unlike traditional design and technical schools is the way the women designers and graphic artists who work there encourage each other to produce work of professional quality without sacrificing the personal voice. Skills include letterpress and photo offset printing, graphic design, photography and copy camera.

WRITING WORKSHOP
A program in which women may learn all aspects of the writing process from self-definition as a writer to how a writer can publish and survive, with the goal of helping women learn how to begin and finish work, how to see it in relation to that of other writers, and how to learn forms that come from a tradition and forms that arise from the self.
