other areas for involvement

CRITICISM

A supportive environment in which women can share their work and learn how to give and receive open and honest criticism. Feminist Studio Workshop criticism groups are a manifestation of the concept of mutual support and responsible mutual criticism as the basic form of relationship among women in our community and the essential tool in expanding that community.

DANCE - THE ENERGY COLLECTIVE

Taught by Katja Biesanz, Eastern and Western disciplines are combined to provide technique to explore the inner and create form. Healing and art can be simultaneous. If closure has stiffened a shoulder, its release opens one's psyche and frees it for dance. Form reveals a culture's content and creates it. The dance of our values enables us to choose what we embody as women.

SPINNING OFF

A publication whose goal is to provide information about events, services and issue to Los Angeles communities (feminist, lesbian, Black, Latina, etc.) that have limited access to other media. It provides a forum for women's culture in Los Angeles as well as for Woman's Building events and publicity.

SLIDE LIBRARY

A national collection of women's art with slides available for rental or purchase, the Slide Library reaches an audience of art history teachers and students, art teachers and students and artists.

APPRENTICESHIP

In the process of being developed, this program will provide Feminist Studio Workshop students with the opportunity to work with Los Angeles women artists and receive one-to-one guidance in the development of their own work.

THE LOS ANGELES WOMEN'S VIDEO CENTER

The Video Center offers workshops, exhibitions, productions and a supportive environment for women to learn technical skills while developing ideas and imagery suited to the medium. Currently in production are TV public service announcements on women's issues.

WOMEN AGAINST VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

An activist organization working to end images of violence against women in mass media through public education, consciousness-raising and mass consumer action, WAVAW offers women the opportunity to learn skills in community organizing while working in various areas of planning and carrying our action campaigns.

THE COMMUNITY GALLERIES

The galleries include one-woman and group shows, the Open Wall Gallery for Woman's Building members, and internships for Feminist Studio Workshop students in gallery administration and installation procedures.

PARTICIPATION

Each woman in the Feminist Studio Workshop participates in the Core Process and in the Project area of her choice. The Projects offer classes and one-day workshops which will be housed int eh Woman's Building Extension Program. Women will have a choice from among those offered as part of their tuition.

TIME AND MONEY

Core Process meets two consecutive days each week (this year Thursday and Friday). Project classes and workshops are scheduled in the evening and on some weekends. Depending on how many classes you take, enrollment in the Feminist Studio Workshop is equivalent to full or part-time enrollment in any college or university and work schedules should be considered in light of this.

Tuition for 1978-79 is $1200. We request a $100 non-refundable deposit to reserve a place for you. Tuition is used to pay faculty and administrative salaries; administrative expenses (including promotion, supplies, postage); a percentage of the operating costs of the Woman's Building (telephone, utilities, insurance); and costs for the Projects (materials and equipment upkeep).

We feel that it is important to plan how you will pay tuition since the extension of the Workshop depends solely on tuition. We are not able to provide scholarships. Loans are available from banks and credit unions -- there is a Feminist Federal Credit Union in Los Angeles. Some women have received grants independently.

YEAR'S SCHEDULE

The Feminist Studio Workshop 1978-79 begins September 21st, 10 a.m., at the Woman's Building. The year ends June 9th with a three-week vacation in Winter and one week in Spring. On September 16th, 1-3 p.m., we are having an open house at the Woman's Building for anyone interested in the Workshop.

Recognizing the value a degree may have in future educational or professional endeavors for some of our students, the Feminist Studio Workshop has formed affiliations with several degree granting institutions. The degree programs available to Workshop students are: Antioch West College (Bachelor of Arts, accredited); Goddard College (Master of Arts, accredited); International College (Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Doctorate, non-accredited).
