Imagine yourself in a school that actively demands self motivation and a committment to yourself and your work. A school that recognizes and values your experiences as a woman. Imagine using those experiences as the foundation for making art. And imagine that "art" includes administration, visual art, writing, graphics, performance, media and healing.
What you've just imagined is what the FEMINIST STUDIO WORKSHOP (FSW) is. The FSW was founded in 1973 by artist Judy Chicago, designer Sheila de Bretteville and art historian Arlene Raven as an alternative to traditional art schools. It was the first independant, feminist educational institution in the world.
Our two year program at the Woman's Building offers you the training to do what you want to. It provides a strong, diverse and lively women's community for you to participate in. To learn and grow with. A community capable of public expression and committed to the creation of women's culture.
"I self published a book of prose and poetry I had written. Nothing could have stopped me... Working with women to create my project revealed to me what the Feminist Studio Workshop is about: creation, determination, overcoming obstacles, learning and support for a women's strongest and most creative self."
Terry Wolverton, FSW student, 1977
