ANNUAL REPORT FOR WRITERS' PROGRAM
The Women Writers' Program at the Woman's Building is multifaceted offering weekly, weekend intensive and year long opportunities for women to explore literature, writing and book publishing. It includes the Feminist Studio Workshop Writing Program, a two year intensive experience in writing, theatre and literature with emphasis on feminist structures, processes and non-traditional means of instruction. The extension program offers evening and weekend workshops in such diverse topics as: writing, the journal, poetry, fiction, playwriting, autobiographical theatre workshops, women's literature, utopian writers and lesbian literature. Offerings for specific communities include journal workshop for women with breast cancer and a writing theatre workshop for women alone. Conferences, performances and readings by prominent and unknown women writers round out the program.

The program began in 1974 when Deena Metzger joined the staff of the Feminist Studio Workshop as an instructor. The major second year event was Women's Words: Making the Self Public, a seminal, ground breaking conference giving attention to women's literature and autobiographical writing. It brought together major women contemporary writers such as Phyllis Chesler, Sara Davidson, Kathleen Fraser, Susan Griffin, Joann Griffin, Jill Johnston, Kate Millett, Maridel LeSueur, Mary Jane Moffat. The conference was made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
