The Feminist Studio Workshop was founded in 1973 by Judy Chicago, Sheila de Bretteville and Arlene Raven, and was the first independent program of female education in the art-related fields. During the first five years of our existence, the FSW has served over two hundred women in our intensive two-year full time program and hundreds more in our short term programs.
The Feminist Studio Workshop is both a school with both degree and non-degree programs available [[strikethrough]] (degrees through other institutions) [[/strikethrough]] and [[strikethrough]] is also [[/strikethrough]] a community of women working in several [[strikethrough]] creative [[/strikethrough]] fields to create and make public our work and thus to reveal aspects of women's culture.
The FSW uses consciousness-raising techniques for small- and large-group interactions and other innovative methods (example, criticism format using techniques of feminist criticism) to create trust and set a context for full relationships among women which include both support and criticism.
Classes and workshops include journal writing, visual art criticism, graphics conception and production, theatre, performance, art history, feminist issues, project work groups with feminist artists, study groups, and more. Included in the program are also the activities of the graphics lab., new moves program, Lesbian Art Project, writers series, feminist education program and summer workshop.
Future plans include expansion of the student body, opening of the educational structure, and increased interaction with the public.
FSW has been the site of innovative and pioneering efforts in feminist education, theory and art. It is a unique institution which seeks to give women a glimpse of a possible future in which we reach closer to our full potential.
