COLLABORATION A CHALLENGE FOR ARTISTS

For the past five years Lillian Elliott and Pat Hickman have worked collaboratively, producing a substantial body of work: baskets, bas-reliefs and fiber sculptures. Their work will be exhibited at the Woman's Building from July 11 through August 14.

In addition to the work done jointly, each artist continues to do her own seperate, remarkably different work. Elliott employs a wide range of techniques, from weaving to xerox, to produce irregularly shaped painted baskets. Hickman has experimented since 1977 with hog with casings as a sculptural material for her constructions.

Collaboration allows the artists to push their limits further, in size, concept and construction. Elliott states, "Collaboration makes things possible that neither of us can accomplish alone." For both artists it has meant taking more risks and not being "safe" or doing what is known or predictable.

Their work has been exhibited widely in the United States and Europe. In 1985 they produced a major installation for the 12th International Biennial of Tapestry in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Concurrently, an installation of paintings on tablecloths and lampshades by Virginia Hoge will be on view in the Cafe Gallery at the Woman's Building. A joint reception for both exhibits will be held July 11 from 6 - 9 P.M. Elliott and Hickman will discuss Their work in a "Salon" slated for July 10 at 8P.M. Admission to the "Salon" is $5, and $4 for members.
