BOOKBINDING WORKSHOP

On February 7 & 14, 1987, the Woman's Building will present a workshop in limp vellum binding. It will be taught by Griselda Warr, Book Conservator at the Huntington Library in San Marino. The class will meet from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at 1727 North Spring Street in downtown Los Angeles. The fee is $40.

Participants will make a limp vellum binding that is entirely non-adhesive, relying on sewing for its strength. It will be sewn on double alum-tawed thongs which are then laced into the vellum cover. Other types of limp vellum bindings will be provided for discussion and experimentation. Limp paper bindings will also be demonstrated. Participants need not to be experienced bookbinders; if they have sewn a book on tapes and are used to handling paper, they will have no trouble. Vellum and alum-tawed skin will be supplied. Each participant should bring some small sections ready for sewing: 5"x3" and 3/4" thick. Bring small tools, folders, knives, straight edges, dividers, needles. A small finishing press would be useful.

Griselda Warr trained in bookbinding at the Camblewell Art School in Britain and subsequently spent five years at the Pierpoint Morgan Library in New York. She is currently book conservator at the Huntington Library in San Marino.

The Woman's Building is a public center dedicated to the presentation of women's creative accomplishments. Founded in 1973, it is the oldest feminist cultural institution in the world. For further information, please call 213/221-6161.
