Women's Studies, Some contemporary Feminist Ideas about Art and Culture, Part IV: The Debates.

This lecture workshop is a continuation of themes from Part III, focusing on some of the recent ideas within feminist thinking: dialectics, semiotics, psychoanalytic theory, structuralism and deconstruction, as these illuminate questions of art and culture. The emphasis will be on some of the debates, e.g. essentialism versus historical materialism. Sondra Hale will facilitate these sessions along with other theorists.

Sondra Hale, who holds a Ph.D. in anthropology (with aesthetic anthro. as a subfield) is a lecturer in Women's Studies at Cal State Long Beach, where she has taught feminist theory and women and the arts.

Creative Writing

A workshop open to both new and experienced writers. all forms will be explored, including poetry, fiction and journals. There will be in-class writing exercises as well as discussions of work produced by participants outside of the workshop. Disabled women are particularly encouraged to participate in this safe, supportive environment.

Anne Finger is a fiction writer whose work has been published in Feminist Studies, Thirteenth Morn, Antioch Review and Socialist Review, as well as in several anthologies. She was the winner of the Joseph Henry Jackson Award in 1984, for her collection of short fiction.

Graphic Production: The Basics

Follow a job from concept through the printed piece and develop a working knowledge of production processes and procedures. Become familiar with or increase your knowledge of 4-color process, keylining, cropping, proportion, halftones, and much more. Recommended for those interested in taking, Paste-up Basics.

Paste-up Basics

A one-day seminar on the basics of paste-up. We will discuss equipment and supplies, and where paste-up fits in the overall production process. There will be a series of demonstrations showing how to do a paste-up, using a variety of methods on several different projects. Participants must have some production experience.

Lee Scott is a freelance graphic designer and a graduate of the UCLA Graphic Design Department. She was associate art director/advertising for Los Angeles magazine and teaches production at Otis/Parsons.

Hmong Quilting: An Introduction

In this workshop, Hmong women will demonstrate the traditional applique and reverse applique techniques used in crafting their ceremonial dress. These techniques are remarkably similar to those used in Western quilting.

These Hmong artists are part of the vast refugee population from Southeast Asia who have immigrated to the United States, bringing with them a complex visual history and rich cultural traditions.

Fiber Arts: Basketry Workshop

Basketmaking with natural fibers is a unique experience designed to open up the imagination through the manipulation of materials growing all around the Southern California area. Participants will construct a traditional form and be encouraged to pursue experimental abstract shapes. on the first day, a rustic Appalachian melon-shaped basket will be produced; on the second day, pine needle basketry will be introduced.

These workshops are designed for the beginning basket makers, as well as the experienced ones. Early enrollment is essential, since many of the fibers need presoaking and three weeks drying time. Specific instructions regarding the types of material to be collected are available upon registration.

Rosalie Friis-Ross is a fiber artist with extensive experience in all aspects of basket making. She has exhibited at the Design Center of Los Angeles, the UCLA Wight gallery, the Tidepool Gallery and at the National Invitational Basketry Exhibition. Currently, she teaches through a California Arts Council Grant.

Book Arts: Limp Vellum Bookbinding Workshop

In this two-part workshop, participants will make a limp vellum binding that is entirely non-adhesive, relying on sewing for its strength. It will be sewn on double alum-tawed thongs which are then laced into the vellum cover. Other types of limp vellum bindings will be provided for discussion and experimentation. Limp paper bindings will also be demonstrated.

Participants need not be experienced bookbinders. if they have sewn a book on tapes, and are used to handling paper, they will not have any trouble. Vellum and alum-tawed skin will be supplied. Each participant should bring some folded sections ready for sewing: roughly 5"x3" and 3/4" thick. Bring small tools: folders, knives, straight edges, dividers, needles etc.

Griselda Warr trained in bookbinding at the Camblewell Art School in Great Britain and subsequently spent five years at the Pierpoint Morgan Library in New York. She is currently the Book Conservator at the Huntington Library in San Marino.
