Dear Mother,

We are still sitting waiting for Dean's final license to come through (from the medical tests). He has obtained the cart's license and a receipt for his fee, has all the supplies ready, and is eager to go. I think he will enjoy being out in the streets, observing people and talking to customers. As I probably mentioned before, he had to join the Teamsters. Someone in the PHP program (a therapist) told me a friend of his sometimes grosses $200 a day with his wagon. If it proves good enough, maybe I'll take one up too!

aThe weather has been poor. Hot--so hot I arrive at work dripping with sweat, and lots of rain.

Another job possibility has turned up for me. I am waiting until July to learn finally about the editorial secretary and statistical type positions with Planned Parenthood, and my agency has also informed me of an executive secretarial position with a neighborhood house within walking distance of the apartment that pays even better and involves writing annual reports and doing my own correspondence. I interview with them on Friday. So I think I shall soon get out of this miserable job before long into something that not only pays better but offers opportunities for interesting work. The trouble here is that the work is completely without responsibility. For example, I typed 23 form letters yesterday and put a bunch of certificates in numerical order. That's about typical. When I took the typing test at Planned Parenthood I did 75 wpm, which shows I have been improving on this job. My shorthand has also come back pretty well. I have met some pretty unhappy people at employment agencies; they wished they could type! At least, in a hard time like the present all such skills come in pretty handy.

Well, that's about all the news at this point. I hope your garden is doing well and the heat is not as oppressive there as it is here. But then, perhaps you don't suffer from the heat as I do.

Love,
Doris
