November 1, 1972 Dear Mother, Forgive me for such a long silence. It isn't that I've been so busy. But I had lost a lot of sleep until recently and didn't feel like writing. I have decided to quit working on the book for the present and find work. I have applied, as I said before, for Unemployment, and will be receiving almost as much as I could get for working within a week now if I don't succeed--today I will go out looking for the second time. Dean is much better - but we've had to pay the doctor for this good care. He is on his feet and awaiting a few stitches, probably no skin transplant after all--this week. Peter is working part-time and thus helping with the budget. He cleaned up the entire kitchen last night, worked like a beaver - he is always the preparer of the evening meal, does most of the shopping - and is very helpful. Dean has a real Kingdom to command here with me and Peter at his beck and call. We - Peter and I - went to Chicago to pick up our things-last Saturday. We found the management had stolen several things but couldn't prove it, so
