Dear Dr. Waugh,
Your letter dated March 27th received yesterday not hearing from you for a long time, thought you had given up your cruise. Owing to Jarrett telling you that he had an offer to purchase Whelan's Yacht for $500.00. I hope you do not think I was trying to snake some graft off you. I can assure you Jarrett had no such offer neither would a man that had any sense expect to get a Boat of that class for such a low figure. Jarrett was simply getting off a Bluff which he is best accustomed to trying, not always he can work it.
Now about the Rose as I have already told you she would be all right to go to Mary's Harbor or Alexis Bay (the latter 14 miles North of Battle where there is good fishing) but to go North of that to Eagle River not good enough for me, certainly they can build a house over her but not high enough for comfort. another thing you would want a sleeping Bag each & lay on the bottom of Boat with not room enough to stir & the only cooking you would be able to do would be with a small oil burner, you would not be able to build Berths in her. I think she is too narrow & would be cranky with a house on her. I do not know be I expect Mm Croucher will want 8 or 10 dollars per day you to do all repairs or fitting & find all supplies. For my part I would not give more than $5.00 a day & he to find Gasoline & Engineer. do not tell him I said that it would make us bad friends. I do not see how you could manage for any length of time on the Rose you certainly would have to go on shore & pitch your camp & Book. you know the Rose & size of her & must please yourself & I have this to say & you must excuse my bluntness. could I afford it, I wanted to
