Dr. L. M. Waugh, Gives Remarkable Lecture On Great Open Spaces Of New Foundland And Labrador

Dr. Leuman M. Waugh, of 203 Cliff avenue, Pelham, held the wrapt attention of a large gathering of members at the Men's Club meeting of Christ's Chruch, Pelham Manor, Monday night, when he recounted in detail, with colored lanterns slides, his exploits in the far north. "One of the most remarkable and entertaining lectures heard in Pelham this winter" was the general comment of those who had the good fortune to hear Dr. Waugh.

The glories of the outdoor life were depicted with a zest that inspired his auditors with a desire for the great open spaces.

Dr. Waugh has made three trips to the far north. In 1921 he was a member of a party that explored the coast of Newfoundland and in 1923 and 1924 he took part in separate trips along the Labrador coast. All three trips were vacation trips.

The medical men in the party had opportunity to especially observe the teeth and mount conditions of the Eskimos. He enjoyed the friendship of Captain Moses Bartlett, who was skipper of the S.S. Roosevelt, when Perry went to the North Pole and also Mr. Bradley's skipper, under whose auspices Dr. Cook started on his trip to the Pole.

Captain Bartlett organized the trip into New Foundland waters for the party of which Dr. Waugh was a member. They went up and down the coast of Labrador and New Foundland a distance of 1500 miles in their own boat last summer and were away from July 4 to September 10.

The party was at Indian Harbor when the World Fliers arrived on the last leg of their world tour. The vessel moved 300 miles north of Indian Harbor and Dr. Waugh had the pleasure of viewing the great cliffs which |

Salmoning, fishing and hunting proved excellent diversions and members of the Men's Club saw pictures of salmon leaping the falls 12 feet high. Pictures of goose and duck shooting and caribou were also thrown on the screen. In all Dr. Waugh had 200 colored lanterns slides of the trip.

He reached a point far up in the Eskimo country and saw the work of the Grenfell Missions along the coast and then went farther north and saw the work of the Moravian Missionaries who accompanied his party on a portion of the trip. Captain Moses Bartlett also accompanied the explorers on part of the trip.
