Dr. L. M. Waugh, of Pelham, formerly of this city, and associate dean of Columbia School of Dentistry, was present at the Social Guild of the North Avenue Presbyterian Church last evening and gave a most interesting account of his trip made with his son to Labrador, leaving New York last June and taking seventy-eight days for the cruise.
This trip was made on their thirty foot yacht primarily to find out the effect of foods on the teeth and to find out the condition of the teeth of primitive peoples who eat no cooked foods. Dr. Waugh is a dental specialist and found that these people of Labrador have practically perfect teeth.
Incidental to their trip, they made numerous studies and moving pictures of life and habits of the people and also of the wonderful scenic effects. Included in the latter were a great many pictures of icebergs, ocean scenes, falls, etc. Pictures were also shown of the whaling and cod industries which proved to be most interesting.
Dr. Waugh has a letter from the Canadian Mounted Police which states that his boat, by far, is the smallest boat that ever went so far north and the only privately owned boat that put in at Port Burwell this year.
Dr. Waugh is the proud possessor of the personal diary of Captain Moses Bartlett, made while accompanying both Peary and Cook on their North Pole Expeditions. It will be recalled that it was Captain Bartlett's testimony given members of the National Geographic Society which settled the Peary-Cooke controversy as to which really reached the North Pole.
Following the lecture, music was furnished by the troubadours for dancing. During this time, the committee in regular Eskimo costumes brought from Labrador by Dr. Waugh, served cake and coffee, Mrs. D. Ing and Mrs. C. Fauver in charge.
Assisting Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Fervris, as chairmen, where Mr. and Mrs. Luther Hawley (Mrs. Hawley is Dr. Waugh's sister), Mr. and Mrs. Clayton K. Fauver, Mr. and Mrs. David R. Rough, Mr. and Mrs. Martin H. Ford, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Humphreys, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Rutzler, Mr. and Mrs. William Welton, Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Nieschlag, Mr. and Mrs. David G. Ing, Mr. and Mrs Jordon, Mr. and Mrs. William E. Horn and Mr. and Mrs. Albert G. Bixler. The committee is grateful for the help given them by John E. Vincent, who ran the moving picture machine, and to George Couenhoven for operating the stereopticon machine.
