Dr. L. M. Waugh Tells Story Of Labrador

Members Of Pelhamn Post, American Legion, Hear Interesting Story Of Expedition Into Ice Fields

Dr. Leuman M. Waugh, of Pelham, entertained the members of Pelham Post No. 50, American Legion, at their meeting at the Pelham Manor Village Hall last night, with an illustrated lecture on his experiences in the Labrador.
Dr. Waugh said that the original purpose in visiting Labrador was to investigate the condition of health among the Eskimos. With his son and two other companions, the Doctor has for the past five years sailed through the water off the coast of Labrador and also into rivers and fiords along the coast in a specially constructed 34 foot boat, that drew only 29 inches of water when loaded.
He stated that although the section of Labrador formerly withing the boundaries of Newoundland but now part of Canada was equal in size to that of New York State, the population for the greatest part of the year was only 2100 persons, including Eskimos, Indians and native Labradorans.
This, however, was not the case in the frozen wastes that the Eskimo originally came from, Dr. Waugh stating that he had at one time examined the teeth of 78 Eskimos and found only seven cavities.
Following the illustrated slides, Dr. Waugh showed two reels of motion pictures, many of which were taken of scenes that no white man had witnessed before. The pictures taken during a terrible storm in August 1927, in which mountainous waves tossed the little craft about, and scenes in fiords whose sides rose many feet sheer from the sea into the air, were very interesting.
