Our stay in Manchester was very enjoyable, more or less as expected. The ladies' programme acquainted me with many ladies; my biggest thrill was having tea with Lady Darwin, being introduced by her to Mrs. Niels Bohr. Of course I spent most of my time with the ordinary wives, making friends with an American girl & spending quite a bit of time with a Swiss girl & French girl; we may visit both later. The American had spent a year in France & her French was pretty good; so we spoke a good deal in French with the French & Swiss girls. I also spoke French with a Czech woman.
