{SPEAKER name="Phyllis May"}
I want to open it up for questions so

[00:37:50]
{SPEAKER name="Audience Member 1"}
How often do you get very intricate designs with a lot of beads and things?
[00:37:57]
How often would you be able to clean it?
[00:37:59]
How long would you leave it in until you might change it?

[00:38:02]
{SPEAKER name="Phyllis May"}
Ok I'll repeat the question.
[00:38:04]
If you have an intricate design, how often would you clean your hair?
[00:38:11]
How long would you be able to keep the design?

[00:38:13]
{SPEAKER name="Ms. Corvin"}
Well it depends on the hair texture and how you care for it.

[00:38:18]
You can shampoo your hair while you're in the shower with your braids still in and you can oil it.

[00:38:24]
The key to it is to tie it up and if you keep it tied up that keeps it.

[00:38:31]
But when you shampoo it you have to do it very gently.

[00:38:34]
And depending on the style it can last you anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months.

[00:38:41]
{SPEAKER name="Phyllis May"}
Other questions, yes.

[00:38:44]
{SPEAKER name="Audience Member 2"}
When you were introducing the ladies, you referred to a West Coast style, contemporary braiding.

[00:38:53]
Wonder if the ladies can talk a little bit about just how recognizable those styles are

[00:38:59]
and whether they're talking about just current fashion

[00:39:02]
or whether there are real differences in cornrowing in different parts of the country
[00:39:08]
that go back further than just what's currently fashionable.

[00:39:12]
{SPEAKER name="Phyllis May"}
Are there differences in styles in different parts of the country, Ms. Smith?

[00:39:19]
{SPEAKER name="Ms. Smith"}
Yeah you'd be able to recognize different styles.

[00:39:24]
Particularly the beading and the intricate stuff that I do is recognized because it's intricate
[00:39:30]
and you don't see a lot of it walking around.

[00:39:33]
You'd be able to recognize it because you might see yarns and threads braided into the hair and a lot of wrapping flat down on the scalp,

[00:39:40]
and a lot of design and patterns and what have you.

[00:39:45]
And you would also be able to notice something that Joyce done,
[00:39:48]
if you're familiar with braids, or something that Ernestine done
[00:39:51]
you might see someone on the street and you can say "Ernestine done your hair"
[00:39:54]
because you know her style of braiding, and you know, what have you.
