So. Montville Me July 31, 1865

Dear Col.

Pardon my delay in writing you in reply to your proposition.
My family physician gave me his decision yesterday that I should hazard my life by returning south at least this Fall. He says I have certain chronic diseases about me either brought on or aggravated by my rosidence South the frost two years which would render it the veriest Suicide for me to return, till I am free from them. I have delayed, hoping to get his permission to return, but he has grown more & more decided every time he has observed me since I returned. I shall be in correspondence with the American Missionary Association
