& I can say to you now in confidence that Mr. Day will not be returned to take charge of the school in the "Bretten House" A man of the most thorough qualifications, & of general breadth of mind & culture will be selected for that place. Pardon the haste with which I write, & my delay in writing, for it has been for it has been a most painful thing to my own feeling to come to the decision not to return to Some department of the work for the Freedmen this Fall.
