teacher, upon what ground of reasoning can they compel colored children to leave a School taught by a competent white Teacher?
I have instructed, (as an act of courtesy) all in my Schools who have been attending other Schools to return to them, and many of them have done so but 
[[strikethrough]] if [[/strikethrough]] I [[strikethrough]] compel them [[/strikethrough]] have no power to compel them to [[strikethrough]] return [[/strikethrough]] do so.

The Superintendent of one of these voluntary Associations called on me this morning, and in a very courteous and gentlemanly manner denied that anybody but those placed here, under Gen. Butler, had a right to open a free school for colored people here - so I suppose [[strikethrough]] his [[/strikethrough]] that according to his idea, the Methodists, Baptists, and Episcopalian Churches are to be prohibited from teaching the colored people in Norfolk. O for a large-hearted Christianity. And away with these foolish, petty jealousies.
