 prosperous.  The schools in Charlottesville are doing well, another teacher has just arrived from the north.  Miss Carkin from Boston.  Miss Gardner from Nantucket is a very efficient teacher and we have decided to select the most promising scholars at Charlottesville and give them to her for a Normal School.  I have just received tuittion maps &c for her use. 
Mr. Mulgrove is a citizen of Charlottesville and is doing as well or better than could reasonably be expected of a southern man.
As Louisa C. H. Mr Powell continues his school.  he had a vacation from Christmas to Feb 1st because we could not hire the school house.  He is a Freedman, has always been free. his services have been very satisfactory.  
At Gordonsville we are doing well again. at christmas we lost about 40 scholars by moving to other places many of their were among the best we had
