Yours of 15th inst. is rec'd and I assure you we are very glad to find, that your judgment approved ours, that it is of vital importance to the success of this good work that the colored people shall cooperate strenuously with us. I have little confidence in any attempts to propitiate former rebels by any complaisance toward them; I dread any action or the part of Societies at the North which shall tend to pauperize the blacks; I know the North will not long pour out so freely as it has done of its abundance to help there, unless it can be clearly proved that the gift of Education is appreciated, & becomes a means to
