gradually up hill. We reached Tonchintlz about noon and 1 1/2 leagues more brought us to Huehuetlan. The latter part of the way was rather hilly but there is no great change in the character of the country.

Left Huehuetlan and made 8 leagues largely up hill over a very bad road altitude of Jilitla must be 3000 or 4000 ft.

Road from Huehuetlan descended into a fine valley a couple of miles across and walked by a fine river. After crossing the river with our outfit in a canoe we began the ascent on the other side. Here we first struck the hills which from a part of the Jilitla group of mountains. These mts. are made up of limestone which over a large part of their surfaces. crop out and is broken up into a "pedregal" so that it is hard to climb over it. Coffee. A number of plantations have been started near Jilitla and the young coffee looks thriftly and is growing rapidly. The hard freeze which occurred three years ago nearly killed the old trees but they are growing up rapidly again now.
