Alexandria, Va., Dec. 12th 1867.

Respectfully referred to Capt. E. B. Gates A.S.A.C. 4th Div. 10th Sub. Dist of Va., who will visit Piedmont and ascertain how many freedpeople there are in that vicinity who will attend school and impress upon them the necessity of buying a lot of land and building a school-house themselves; if they cannot do it all themselves, ascertain what amount of assistance it would require to complete it; and any information about the people in that section of your District as will tend to show the expediency of building a house, as requested in the within communication of Miss Warren.
Piedmont district being a good agricultural region, the Freedmen ought to be in a condition to support a school themselves. Please report at your earliest convenience what action is necessary to comply with the within communication
