The late slave has his ear open for every word effecting his freedom and where he hears emancipation scoffed at. and the abolitionist reviled and prophecies that Slavery will soon again be as of old. he will be very apt to feel weary at least and conclude his best place in within sight of the bayonets.

I have just returned from a tour through the county of Maury in this State which to quite an extent there existed the same evils complained of West Tennessee I found that there was no effort made on the part of the white people to give assistance to the blacks that slavery was dead. In Maury County in 1860 there were Slaves 14654 - white 17701 - It was one of the most productive counties in Tennessee. full of the first families- It was the home of Genl Pillow. Senator Nicholas and others of the same sort- Its fighting population went into the rebel nearly almost en masse-unfortunately they were not all killed- they have come home to torment their loyal neighbors and the freedmen. They talk Slavery
