as formerly. The colored people become suspicions and are leaving their employers- complaints were made to me that the blacks did not fulfill their contracts. I went down there and met a convention of Colored people numbering about three thousand five hundred (3500) and talked to them as they should be (as I understand it). I then saw the leading white citizens and talked with them. I believe that all will go well down there hereafter. And the same trouble exists in other localities and I shall as rapidly as possible visit the disturbed sections in person and administer the proper correctives. What the negro wants is assurance. Confidence that he is to have freedom in its ultimates, and all will be well.
