General:
I have the honor to request that the Major General Commanding the Department will detail an Officer of the 25th Infantry to report to me for duty in this Bureau at Memphis.
Bvt. Maj. C. H. Frederick 45th Infty has been relieved by orders from Head Quarters of the Army.
The heavy payments of bounties and the trouble that will doubtless raise in consequence of the growing political excitement will require more force than I now have at my disposal in order 6th discharge the functions of the Bureau satisfactorily.

Gregory, Mr J. H.
Columbia, Tenn.

Dear Sir:
Your note addressed "to whom it may concern" in reply to inquiries concerning a bill presented by the jailor of Maury County has been received. You close by refusing to give information and yet express the hope that it will give you "an opportunity to expose a little corruption"
If there is, or has been any corruption connected with this matter I would like to know it, and I hope you will avail yourself of this opportunity to expose it. I write to you directly for that purpose, and request that you will expose all the corruption relating to this or any other business within the province of the Bureau, of which you have knowledge. An early reply is respectfully solicited.

Very Respectfully
Your Obdt. Servant
W. P. Carlin
Bt. Major General
