Sir:
The Assistant Commissioner, Bvt Major Genl. W.P. Carlin U.S.A. directs that hereafter you will receive no more patients into the Hospital under your charge for treatment. You will also discharge as rapidly as possible, those already there, with a view of the closing of the Hospital at as early a day as practicable. The treatment of destitute colored patients at their homes, and those who apply for medicine at the dispensary, may be continued; but all other cases requiring treatment, must be referred to the city authorities of Nashville, Tenn.

U.S.A. directs that you inform the person or persons, in charge of the Canfield Colored Orphan Asylum at Memphis, Tenn that after the 1st day of Jany. 1869, no further aid from the Bureau can be given them in any way. You will also inert yourself to induce the State, County or Municipal

Authorities, to assume the care of the sick and helpless freedmen, as also the inmates of the Asylum. For the latter if possible, interest the sympathies of private benevolent societies.

Carlin, U.S.A. directs that you call upon the Mayor and Health Offices of the City, and endeavor to have them assume the charge of the sick refugees and freedmen now in Hospital at Nashville Tenn. After the 1st of January, next, no further support by this Bureau, can according to law, be extended to this class of people.

You will report in writing to this office, the result of your interview.
