The 'American Missionary" Extra

The Appeal-A Suggestion

This (the September) number of the "Missionary" contains an appeal of the officers of the American Missionary Association, asking for the immediate aid to the amount of $50,000, to enable it to begin the operations of the coming year without grave embarrassment.

An attentive perusal is asked for the Appeals.

Without assuming to direct, we beg leave to suggest that this sum may be raised by

10 persons giving $1000 each, making $10,000
20 persons giving $500 each making $10,000
100 persons giving $100 each making $10,000
100 persons giving $50 each making $5,000
200 persons giving $20 each making $4,000
400 persons giving $10 each making $4,000
500 persons giving $5 each making $2,500
Others, in sums less than $t each.... $4,500
$50,000

If our friends appreciate the exigency of the crisis in the condition of the Freedmen, and our work among them, will they thus aid us to prepare for another decisive effort in their behalf?

Those friends who contemplate leaving a legacy to the Association are invited to consider whether they cannot become their own executors, so for as now to give a part at least of the sum, when it may do much more good than a much greater amount hereafter.

If the responses of our friends indicates their general approval of this suggestion, it will give us pleasure to report, in the religious press, its weekly progress, and, we trust, its ultimate success.
