Bureau Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands,
Head Quarters, 8th Sub. District of Virginia
Wytheville, VA., Sept 27 1868.
Mr Manley
Dear Sir,
I have engaged a Mr Safewright an old school teacher, a white man, formerly one of Capt. Austin's Registering Officers to take the school at Wytheville this next month on experiment. I am entirely certain that the colored people cant keep the school up. What can you do for me. May I ask for suggestions Can you let me have anything say $15 a month from any fund. Can you, if that is impracticable recommend an increase to $25 a month for rent of building. I am at my wits end to know how to do my duty in this line viz. Have every African child in this Sub Dist attending a fair school this winter.
