Dear Sir,

I have not yet heard from you regarding the teacher at Tunstalls Station in New Kent nor have I been able as yet to go over there. I hope to get time this week although I am unwell to get over & see how the work goes on [[strikethrough]] there [[/strikethrough]]. I have talked to a congregation of 200 at "Cat Tail Church" one Sunday & two Sundays to a congregation of smaller size at W. P. Church & find that I have not yet got to the point where I can lay contributions on the colored people toward support of teacher. There are whites industriously circulating the report that the children must pay, that the yankees only wish to rob the freedmen. If I lay a direct tax, it will give color to this among ignorant people & keep many children from school. I have hit on
