Hanover County - Virginia
March 2nd 1869
Mr Manly Dear Sir
As school teacher here for and on behalf of the colored people and under the Supervisement of yourself as chief, I wish to be informed sir whether it is my duty or not to close my school at any time and to go and work on the public roads, I don't ask the question Mr Manly because I feel any better than those who labour on the roads, & have never refused to go. but I don't think it is right that I should close my school as often as the road master choses to call me out during the session if it is not my duty Mr Manly to close my school & go to work on the county roads, I wish you to write me word what your decision is. Either for or against the matter.
I am with due respect your humble servant Wm P. Brown colored
