Gordonsville Virginia
April 2nd 1869

Rev. R. M. Manley
Dear Sir
Maj_ W._ R._ Morse of Culpeper County sent me a printed circular, accompanied by a letter in which he instructed me to make my Report to you, as I have been Reporting to him.

My School at Mechanicsville is prospering finely for beginers. Though twenty five at least will leave this month, _ten of the said number are gone already,_ as they were grown up Scholars and are compeled to go out to work as the weather opens. There are five Scholars in the School who walk five miles every morning and evening, though learning, I have nine reading in Hillards Fourth Reader, and thirty three in the third, and only ten months there the could neither spell or say their Letters. Please let me hear from you at your pleasure.

Respectfully Yours
William P. Lucas
