Clarksville July 6th 1869
Mr R. M. Manly
Dear Sir the Building where the school is held is an old dilapidated affair formally a Public House. The School is held in the Basement it is very unhealthy as the windows are small and when the doors are closed (as they are in wet weather) it is suffocating, and so dark that many are unable to read. In cloudy weather it is the same. The breath of a hundred persons in a room with poor ventilation may be imagined but not described especially in this hot climate. $8 per month is paid for the use of the Basement in summer it is to hot and in winter it is to cold with the disadvantages increased as the doors would be closed. The windows not giving sufficient light for school purposes. There is a movement among the colored people to Build a church as they have none. The White people
