In obedience to Circular No 23 C.S. issued from Hd Qrs Asst Comr of Va. I have the honor to report that it would be very desirable to re-establish the colored school at this place, Laurencevill, Va. There would be a daily attendance of nearly or quite one hundred pupils, [[?]] that number at the close of the school last June. I have been unable to get any suitable building for a school room, yet land for a site can be had very cheap, rented or purchased, upon which to erect a school house, within one mile of this place. A building would be required 25. by 30 feet base, estimated cost of the building three hundred dollars, including building material. The friends of the school are exceedingly

This is also how he is listed on the Virginia Freedmen's Bureau Staff List, except at that time he was a Capt. The writer of this letter got his last name spelled wrong.
