winter to keep from starveing. I think in the Spring one or two schools may be established in the County. One at Ayletts and one at West Point. I presume some 50 pupils attend at at Ayletts, and perhaps as many at West Point. There are no buildings in the County suitable for schoolhouses, in fact there are none unoccupied, consequently new buildings will have to be erected which would be a considerable expense to the Bureau, as the lumber &c for building, would have to be brought from Fort Monroe or Richmond.    I shall endeavor to impress the advantages of education on the minds of the freedpeople, and I trust by next Spring they will have raised a sum sufficient for the erection of one or more houses. They have no money now, and will not have until their crops are gathered and sold.
