In compliance with "Circular No 5 War Department Bureau of R.F. and A.L. Washington Feby 20th 1867," I have the honor to report that I have visited the colored schools of this county - four (4) in number - and was much pleased to observe the improvement which the most of the pupils have made since I last visited them.

Three of these schools are taught by ladies whose hearts, as well as heads, are engaged in the discharge of their duties. As a general thing, the schools are well attended. I do not think myself competent to suggest any improvement to the present system of teaching. I think, however, that they lack the order which is generally found in district schools in the northern states, but as many of those school are so crowded and the scholars are so irregular in their attendance. I presume this defect can not well be remedied.
