LEASE OF LANDS, TENEMENTS, &c. 

Memorandum of an Agreement made this 11th day of January 1866, between Capt. F. A. Seely, A. Q. M. and Financial Agent of the Bureau of Refugees Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, as provided for by the Acts of Congress respectively approved March 12, 1863, and July 2, 1864, and March 3, 1865, for taking charge of, and leasing abandoned and [[strikethrough]] confiscable [[/strikethrough]] lands, houses, and tenements in the Eastern District and Samuel Roach (cold) of New Berne in the County of Craven and State of North Carolina
WITNESSETH, that in pursuance of said Acts, and of the instructions of the Commissioner of the Bureau, the said Agent, for and in behalf of the United States, agrees, upon the terms hereinafter contained, to lease to the said Samuel Roach (cold.) from the first day of January 1866 to the first day of January, 1867, the following described lands and premises, to wit: 
The Abandoned Estate known as the "Lane Plantation" situated on the South side of Adam's Creek and supposed to furnish trees enough to make eight barrels of Turpentine.

And the said Samuel Roach (col'd.) hereby agrees that one equal fourth part of the productions realized by the cultivation and working of the plantation aforesaid shall be promptly gathered, prepared, and delivered to the authorized Agent of the United States at New Berne in said state on or before the first day of January, 1876, in proper packages and condition for transportation.  
And the said Samuel Roach (col'd.} further agrees, in relation to the employment and payment of freedmen worked upon said plantation, that he will employ and pay them, and provide for their families, in compliance with the Regulations of this Bureau, concerning the employment and general welfare of freedmed, which Regulations are made a part of this agreement, so far as they relate to employers and employed, and further that he will do all things required of him by Regulations of the Commissioner of this Bureau concerning abandoned and confiscable property.
