{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
Our adventures in science guest today is Mr. Walter Grant, director of research of the carrier corporation of Syracuse, New York.

[00:00:36]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
Air conditioning is a very important part of modern life. Mr. Grant, and eh, you're gonna tell us a little about air conditioning today and in the future.

[00:00:48]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
First of all I suppose that most air conditioning is,due to comfort-- our desire for comfort. And just what is comfort, Mr. Grant?

[00:00:59]
{SPEAKER name="Walter Grant"}
Well comfort is a sensation that's pretty hard to define, Mr. Davis. I think the most accurate definition of comfort is the absence of discomfort.

[00:01:12]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
Well-

[00:01:12]
{SPEAKER name="Walter Grant"}
In other words, comfort is not an active sensation at all. It's a passive sensation, and only when you're uncomfortable do you really know that you are.

[00:01:21]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
Well maybe we better get down to what air conditioning then is. I suppose in air conditioning you're concerned with certainly temperature, humidity, anything else Mr. Grant?

[00:01:33]
{SPEAKER name="Walter Grant"}
Well, you're really concerned with the control of your physiological environment, temperature, humidity, the motion of the air around you, and the control of purity and as much as it may affect your sensation of odors.

[00:01:48]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
You mean that it's got to smell good as well as be cool and have a low humidity, and have some sense of the air being in motion. Well that's pretty well achieved, isn't it, by modern air conditioning regardless of whether it comes from a little device in the window or from a device that's down in the basement of the building.

[00:02:13]
{SPEAKER name="Walter Grant"}
Yes, air conditioning has been perfected over quite a number of years now. The control of temperature and humidity has been has been reduced to a science. And as a matter of interest you may--
