2. Tremendous changes and advantages since beginning of 20th century - development of science, industrialization, new sensations, as flying, talking pictures, radio, etc.


3. These things have added new dimensions to our life and vision


4. Natural outgrowth of the times various movements in art field. Since 1900:

Impressionism breaking away from academy
Post-impressionism
Cubism
Expressionism
Fauves - Dadaism - Futurism - Constructivism
Abstractionism
Surrealism
Non-objectivism

These were part of the new approach to a changing world


5. In U.S.A. since 1913 (Armory Show) define split away from academy - encouragement of free form

In 1920's Penguin Group again took up battle against stilted and worn out formulas - resulted in Whitney Mus.

A number of movements gained prominence but most popular for a time were: Regionalism and Social Consciousness

Effect of World War II:
Interest in abstract, organic forms, mysticism - escape from reality
