THE ART STUDENTS LEAGUE OF NEW YORK • 215 W. 57TH ST.
ASL
INCORPORATED IN 1878

September 17th, 1942

Mr. Yasuo Kuniyoshi,
Woodstock, New York

Dear Mr. Kuniyoshi:

I wrote to you a week ago inquiring as to whether you would serve on a jury to judge an art competition of I.L.G.W.U. students, for China Relief. You graciously accepted and it was appreciated by all parties concerned. However, something has come up in the meantime which makes it necessary to reconsider our choice. I was given the unpleasant task of informing you of your release from your promise to serve on this jury. It seems that China Relief officials, in their zeal to make this affair an outstanding success, are of the opinion that your name in connection with this competition, might cause adverse comment in places high up, since you have already been prominently connected with one of the projects.

Now it is the feeling of the Board of Control that this attitude is not exactly fair to you. Our good faith in asking you to serve in the first place attests to the fact that the attitude of the Relief officials never occurred to us. They asked for a prominent League instructor and your name was a natural thought. Please consider that the success of this affair for a very worthy cause should be the prime consideration at this time, and however unfounded and unworthy the Relief officials' reasons may be, we feel that the prudent thing to do, is to bow to their wishes.

I would be glad to discuss this at further length anytime you say.

With best regards,

Gregory d'Allesio
