June 17th, 1868 States that in 1864, a freedwoman named Phebe who formerly belonged to him, placed several hundred dollars, and other property, in the hands of Mr. Burch for safe keeping. He took said money to Ohio & has never returned it to said Phebe. The case was placed in the hands of Genl. Fisk, Hd. Qrs. at Nashville, who alleges that he sent an Agent to Ohio to collect all but about $150. of the money, but some of the other property. Genl. Fisk now refuses to turn over the money collected, to Phebe's heirs, (she having subsequently died) on the ground that other parties have laid claim to it. After thorough investigation said claimants were found to have been paid all that was due them, before the money was given to Burch. Genl. Fisk now informs the writer (Houston) that he was unable to satisfy himself as to whom the money belonged, & had donated the same to some institution of learning in Tennessee.
