General:
I have the honor to forward a few hasty & informal notes of affairs at the point, on leaving for Eastport.

At this place there are a number of colored people, mainly doing well. Some refugees, not doing as well, no schools here for either class. Teachers are much needed. Along the railroad affairs are in good condition. Off of it, and where we have no troops, slavery, or the next thing to it, exists in its pristine glory. There are not many slaves nort of the line. Masters are hiring out freedpeople and receiving the price as of old.
